PROUD TO
BE INDIAN

At
the age of 16, ABG's adolescent ambitions to become a painter were nipped in the
bud by his father. With the words, "No son of mine..." and "artists die of
starvation..." echoing in his ears, ABG went on to study medicine. These were the
days of the partition. Life was chaotic in Bihar and Bengal, and his studies took longer
than he thought. As a surgeon, his artistic abilities focused on the craft of
surgery, and painting murals on the walls of a children's ward. As a young
father, he painted school charts for his children and passed on his talent to
them as best he could. It was relatively recently that he got back into painting
- around 10 years ago. Since then he has painted and sketched over 200 portraits
of Swami Vivekananda in many poses, gifting some to individuals and organisations, selling others to raise funds for humanitarian causes. ABG is an
untrained artist, but he has an amazing eye for colour and form. He has tried
his hand in oils but has decided that he is in his element with water colours
and charcoals, painting simple landscapes and portraits. Exhibitions of his
watercolours, oils & pencil sketches were held for several years at Durga pujas
in Delhi. The proceeds from the sales were donated to help earthquake and
tsunami affected victims, as well as to the Vivekananda Rural Service Centre,
New Delhi & Uttarakhand. By selling his artwork, ABG has been able to collect funds to
enable him to continue his social services and community work.
